IIn 1830's the area known today as Arlington Heights was was acquired by William Dunton of Oswego, NY. Few years later he persuaded the Illinois & Wisconsin Railroad to make a stop here, and founded a town called Dunton. When it was incorporated in 1887, the name was changed to Arlington Heights, a part of Wheeling Township.
By 1900 Arlington Heights had about 1,400 inhabitants and it continued to be a mostly farm community until 1960's when the spread of car ownership, along with the expansion of the Chicago-area economy, drove the number of people in Arlington Heights to over 70,000 as per last census in 2000.
